The cultural landscape is shaped by crop production

Under Article 7 of the Agriculture Act, the Confederation is required to establish a general framework for the production of agricultural products in general, and thus also for crops, so that the agricultural sector can operate sustainably and cost-effectively and obtain the highest possible market prices from sales of its products.

In addition to border protection, the Confederation promotes crop production via specific subsidies for individual arable crops and subsidies for the processing of Swiss fruit. The focus is on crop production to provide food and feedstuffs.

The Confederation promotes the breeding of commercial plants which are of high ecological value and of high quality, or which are adapted to the conditions prevailing in the various parts of the country (Article 140 of the Agriculture Act).
