Mission and responsibilities
The Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) ensures that Swiss agricultural production is sustainable, meets market requirements and can play a key role in food security for the population.
What we do
The FOAG strives to ensure that farmers produce high-quality food in a sustainable and market-oriented manner. It advocates for agriculture that contributes significantly to:
- a secure food supply for the population
- the conservation of our natural resources and cultural landscape
- decentralised settlement in Switzerland
Working with the different cantons and farmers’ organisations, the FOAG implements decisions made by the public, parliament and government and plays an active role in shaping agricultural policy.
Legal framework
The Agriculture Act (AgricA, in force since 1 January 1999) provides the framework for sustainable, innovative and more environmentally friendly agriculture. The federal government creates favourable conditions for producing and selling agricultural products in Switzerland and abroad. It compensates agricultural businesses for their public and environmental services through direct payments.
Simple and effective agricultural policy
We take different interests into account when developing solutions. The FOAG works with stakeholders to develop the legal framework for a forward-looking and effective agricultural policy. We draw up robust regulations at ordinance level and implement them efficiently.
A multifunctional agriculture and agri-food industry is essential. We are acting now for tomorrow.
Further information
The FOAG provides a reduced English-language version of its website that does not include all further information such as documents, legislation or links. These can be found on the pages in the three official languages (German, French and Italian).
