Switzerland and FAO – Renewed commitment to global food security
Since 1946, Switzerland has been working within FAO to promote sustainable and innovative agriculture and ensure global food security. The Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) represents Switzerland’s committed and forward-thinking perspective within the organisation.
Switzerland’s election to the FAO Council is strategically important
Switzerland was elected to the FAO Council during the 44th Session of the FAO Conference, which was held in Rome from 28 June to 4 July 2025. This election strengthens Switzerland’s position in international discussions on food security. Switzerland has been a member of FAO since 1946 and is committed to sustainable, inclusive and resilient agriculture in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Innovation is a priority
Led by FOAG Director Christian Hofer, the Swiss delegation emphasised the vital importance of innovation in tackling global nutrition challenges. Innovation is not limited to technology, but also encompasses a social, organisational and financial approach. Switzerland advocates for working with the new generation of farmers to develop solutions.
Tangible commitment to sustainable food systems
Switzerland supported several important decisions, in particular the adoption of three Committee on World Food Security (CFS) instruments relating to data management, gender equality and reducing inequalities. It also supported a resolution on antimicrobial resistance in agricultural and food systems, thereby emphasising its commitment to global health.
Increased international cooperation
Switzerland’s election to the FAO Council opens up new prospects for cooperation. As a member of the Council, Switzerland can actively help to develop a sustainable and multilateral normative framework by sharing its expertise and promoting partnerships. The FOAG will continue to play a leading role in this international dialogue.
