Committee on World Food Security (CFS)

The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) is an intergovernmental body that works to ensure world food security and improve nutrition for all. Switzerland is an active member of the CFS through the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the two responsible federal offices. Switzerland contributes to funding the CFS's High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE). This panel of experts, currently chaired by Prof. Bernard Lehmann, compiles detailed analyses and recommendations for the CFS.

Structure and budget of the CFS

The CFS reports on its activities to the UN General Assembly – through the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) – and to the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (UN FAO). The following units make up the CFS: the CFS Bureau and Advisory Group, Plenary, High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) and the Secretariat.

The CFSʼs core budget is funded in equal parts by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP).

Main themes of the CFS Multi-Year Programme of Work 2020–2023

The CFS Multi-Year Programme of Work 2020-2023 aims to develop the following guidelines and policy recommendations: (a) gender equality and womenʼs empowerment in the context of food security and nutrition; (b) reducing inequalities for food security and nutrition; (c) promoting youth engagement and employment in agriculture and food systems; and (d) data collection and analysis tools.
